Agricultural Work Options in Canada

Foreign workers can come to Canada under one of the following programs:

1. Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP)

This program allows eligible citizens from specific partner countries—including Mexico and several Caribbean nations—to work for approved Canadian employers during peak planting and harvesting seasons. Employment under SAWP can last up to eight months each year, depending on the employer’s needs.

2. Agricultural Stream – Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

This stream is open to applicants from any country and offers year-round employment in agricultural roles such as:

Dairy and livestock operations

Most jobs in this category fall under NOC TEER 4 or 5, such as:

Program Requirements

To apply, a worker must first secure a job offer from a Canadian employer who is approved to hire through the relevant program. In most cases, the employer must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to show that the position cannot be filled by a Canadian worker.

Work permits issued through these programs are usually employer-specific and valid for a limited period. While these roles are temporary, some workers may gain access to pathways to permanent residency through programs like the Agri-Food Pilot or certain Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
