Athletes & Team Personnel
Canada welcomes professional athletes, coaches, trainers, and essential team personnel to contribute to its vibrant sports community. The Athletes & Staff pathway, under the Special Groups category of the Work section, offers foreign sports professionals a specialized route to participate in competitions, leagues, or training programs across the country.
Eligible applicants include:
- Professional or semi-professional athletes invited to Canadian teams or clubs
- Coaches and trainers at elite or developmental levels
- Technical staff and support personnel, such as physiotherapists and scouts
Most candidates receive a closed work permit tied to a specific Canadian organization. Many roles are LMIA-exempt under the International Mobility Program (IMP), recognizing their importance to Canada’s sports and cultural development.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants typically need to:
- Have a formal offer from a recognized Canadian sports team, league, or organization
- Demonstrate prior experience or achievements in the same role
- Show that their involvement will enhance team performance, training, or administration
Work permits are generally issued for the duration of the contract or event, with possible extensions. In some cases, spouses or partners may be eligible for an open work permit. While this pathway is temporary, it can also open doors to permanent residence through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) after gaining qualifying work experience.
