The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the main immigration pathways under Canada’s Express Entry system, designed for skilled professionals living outside Canada who have strong international work experience. This program selects candidates based on key factors such as education, language proficiency, skilled work history, and overall ability to integrate into the Canadian labour market. To qualify, applicants must complete an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) and demonstrate strong English or French language skills before entering the Express Entry pool.
FSWP candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which calculates points for age, education, work experience, language scores, and other factors such as job offers or provincial nominations. Those with competitive CRS scores may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency during scheduled Express Entry draws. Although Canadian work experience is not required, applicants must meet minimum selection criteria to be eligible for the pool.
As part of the broader Express Entry framework, the FSWP works alongside the Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program, and many provinces also offer Express Entry–aligned nomination streams that can boost a candidate’s CRS score.
