Spousal Sponsorship
Through Canada’s Spouse and Common-Law Sponsorship Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner to live, work, and settle in Canada as a permanent resident. This program allows partners to reunite and build their life together in Canada.
Eligible Relationships include legally married spouses, common-law partners (cohabiting for at least one year), and conjugal partners in exceptional circumstances where marriage or cohabitation is not possible.
Eligibility Requirements for sponsors include Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, being at least 18 years old, and the financial ability to support the partner for three years through a Sponsorship Agreement. Sponsors must also meet conditions regarding past sponsorships, legal obligations, and financial or criminal history.
There are two main application types:
- Outland Sponsorship: Processed through the visa office in the partner’s home country or country of residence. Applicants may appeal refusals under this category.
- Inland Sponsorship: Processed within Canada, requiring the couple to live together. The sponsored partner must hold temporary status (visitor, student, or worker) and may be eligible for an open work permit.
