Permanent residents of Canada who are outside the country and do not hold a valid PR card may require a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada. The PRTD acts as temporary proof of permanent resident status and allows a one-time re-entry to Canada by commercial transportation.
A PRTD is commonly required when a PR card has expired, been lost or stolen while abroad, or when an individual is unable to return to Canada through a land border. The document is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) through a visa office or application center in the country where the applicant is currently located.
To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate that they continue to meet Canada’s permanent residence requirements, including the residency obligation of at least 730 days in Canada within the past five years. Certain exceptions may apply in specific circumstances, such as accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or working abroad for a Canadian employer.
